Rescued Produce

This month, we were able to rescue 56,000 pounds of squash, Mexican grape, artichokes, yellow and green peppers, Cherry, vine ripe and hydroponic tomatoes. Hydroponic culture is one of the most exacting and intensive methods of crop production used in agriculture today. Hydroponics is a technology for growing plants in nutrient solutions (water and fertilizers) with or without the use of artificial medium (e.g., sand, gravel, vermiculite, rockwool, peat, coir, sawdust) to provide mechanical support.

Rescued Produce

Did you know that one artichoke contains approximately one fourth of an average sized adults fiber needs? The artichoke is also rich in vitamin C, potassium, folic acid and magnesium. Artichoke is naturally fat free and very low in calories.

The 3000 Club Blog

We are pleased to announce the new 3000 Club Blog! The 3000 Club is such a great way for businesses to get involved in supporting a wonderful charity - Feed My People Children’s Charity Inc - while, at the same time, benefiting from the ever increasing networking opportunities the club offers.

This new blog, designed by Club members ‘Dude, Blog Your Business’ www.dudeblogyourbusiness.com, is part of the effort in both promoting the charity, as well as the business networking club members themselves. Both the charity and the club have a huge number of individuals, all with great stories to tell, whether they be the volunteers down at Nogales, Arizona, rescuing and repacking the fruit and vegetables; the truck drivers shipping the produce to the food banks across America; the volunteers distributing the food from those food banks; even down to the thousands of people who benefit from the millions of tons of fruit and vegetables rescued in the process. This blog is the place for those stories to be told.

Be sure to visit the blog at www.the3000club.org/Blog3K

Yolando SotoOur Executive Director of Borderland Food Bank, Yolando Soto, reports:

Repacking Program

The program will be initiated this produce season 2008-2009. For 13 years, we have educated the produce industry to donate 70 per cent and better product to us mainly because we did not have the volunteer or manpower to sort and repack produce. We will be hiring six experienced employees to begin our small repacking program. We will repack all the produce we receive that is less than 95% good. This will increase the availability of produce for the State and the Nation, helping to reach more families. This will also help prevent the dumpsite from overflowing and help the produce industry with fuel costs, employee time spent going to the dumpsite, etc. We will be repacking the donors product in the same donor boxes so that we can always follow the product’s destination in case of any recalls. The donor label will always carry their product.

Home Depot Community Event - Mesa

On October 18, 2008, The 3000 Club participated in the Home Depot’s Green, Health and Safety Event held at the opening of its new store in Mesa. About 40 vendors participated in the event, ranging from solar panels to green cabs to showcasing of vintage cars.

Home Depot Community Event

A favorite was the VW Beetle, Circa 1964, where we were told you can get as much as 30 miles per gallon. The Police Department of Mesa participated by taking fingerprinting the children and provided safety awareness. Famous Dave's Barbecue and Home Depot provided the barbecue and hot dogs. Music was provided by The Center of Sound. Full Throttle and Powerade quenched the public’s thirst. We thank Home Depot for the opportunity it provided us to create provide awareness of our project.

International Outreach To Mexico

Outreach To MexicoThe 3000 Club has collaborated with the Lions Club of Caborca, Mexico, the Lions Clubs of Tucson and in particular, the Phoenix Phil-Am Lions Club, last October 10 & 11.

Ethel Luzario, Co-Founder of The 3000 Club and Lon Taylor, Founder , are both members of the Phoenix Phil-Am Lions Club as well, and in the International Relations of the District 21C of the Lions Clubs here in Arizona. The Phoenix Phil-Am Lions Club has donated a Phaco emulsifaction machine that, when bought new, is valued at nearly $150,000. This machine provides a safer and more effective eye surgery that will allow the patient to walk immediately after the procedure and resume their normal activities within just a few days.

The 3000 Club’s resources were used in the past in transporting over $225,000 worth of used medical equipment to Mexico about two months ago. We hope that we can continue to partner with other non-profit organization in making a difference in the lives of the people we serve.
